The Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), and Lady Cosgrove will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Sandakan Death Marches during a State Visit to Malaysia from 12 to 15 August.
In 1945, more than 2,000 Australian and British prisoners of war were force marched from Sandakan to Ranau. Hundreds of prisoners died along the 260 kilometre path through Malaysian jungle. By the end of the Second World War, only six Australians had survived.
On 15 August, the Governor-General will join Sandakan prisoner of war, Mr Bunny Glover, and families of former prisoners for the 70th anniversary service at Sandakan Memorial Park.
As part of a wider visit to Malaysia, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove will receive a ceremonial welcome by the King and Queen of Malaysia, meet with the Prime Minister, and visit Australian Defence personnel at RMAF Base Butterworth.
The visit will also mark 60 years of diplomatic relations between Australia and Malaysia, and highlight the significant business, education and defence links between both nations.
Please note that all times are local, some of the times may change slightly, and that the opportunities are visual only.
