The Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), and Lady Cosgrove will undertake a State Visit to New Zealand from 31 May to 3 June.
At the invitation of the Governor-General of New Zealand, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Dame Patsy Reddy, the visit by Sir Peter and Lady Cosgrove will focus on the strong friendship and historic, cultural, business and defence links between both nations.
This is the first State Visit to New Zealand by the Governor-General and will include more than 20 engagements in Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch, Kaikoura and Stewart Island.
At Government House in Wellington, Sir Peter will receive a State Ceremonial Welcome and later lay wreaths at the Hall of Memories and the Australian Memorial in honour of Australians and New Zealanders who have fought side-by-side for over a century. In Auckland, the Governor-General will meet with military personnel and their families at SAS Base Papakura before attending a Trans-Tasman Business Circle event.
In Christchurch, the Governor-General will visit the International Antarctic Centre to be briefed on New Zealand’s scientific and expedition efforts in Antarctica. Sir Peter will also pay respects at the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial in remembrance of the 185 people killed and those seriously injured by the natural disaster in 2011. In Kaikoura, the Governor-General will also meet with first responders, emergency services personnel and volunteers involved in emergency management following the November 2016 earthquake.
Later, the Governor-General’s visit to Stewart Island will focus on the environmental and protective management strategies used in the predator-free zone.
