25 March 2020: Governor-General's statement in relation to COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic is testing all of us.
It is difficult to come to grips with a situation that is having an impact on every facet of our lives in ways we wouldn’t have considered possible just weeks ago.
As we work our way through this crisis, be aware that we all have a role to play. We must listen to the direction and advice of authorities but we must also all exercise personal responsibility.
Take precautions. Be sensible. Don’t take risks.
Do not put others at risk by being naïve, ignorant or fatalistic.
It is also important to recognise that exercising personal responsibility does not mean you are responsible only for yourself.
We all need to stay connected and stay kind. As Australians, that is who we are.
I have spent the last few days contacting organisations of which I am Patron.
I have been heartened by the way they are responding to the impact of the pandemic.
Their core mission of helping others and supporting the community remains the same but they have modified their operations and method.
I will continue reaching out to organisations and individuals in coming days and encourage everyone to do the same with the people in their lives.
Stay safe, stay kind and stay well.
