On Saturday 2 September 2017, at Birdsville Airport, the Governor-General, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), and Lady Cosgrove were welcomed by Board Member of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the Honourable Bruce Scott, and Mrs Joan Scott; and the Mayor of the Diamantina Shire Council, Councillor Geoff Morton, and Mrs Beverley Morton.

Afterwards, at the Birdsville Hotel, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Manager, Mr Ben Fullagar, viewed the facilities and met with staff and patrons.

Later, at the Birdsville Bakery, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the owner, Mr Martin Josselyn, viewed the facilities and met with staff and patrons.

Then, at the Wirrarri Centre, Birdsville, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of Tourism and Events Manager, Ms Jessica Greenaway, viewed the facilities and met with staff and local Indigenous Elders.

In the afternoon, at the Birdsville War Memorial, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of Councillor Morton, viewed the memorial and laid a wreath.

Afterwards, at the Australian Inland Mission, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of Patrol Minister, Uniting Church Frontier Services, Reverend Sunil Kadaparambil, viewed the facilities and met with volunteers.

Later, at the Birdsville Clinic, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Nursing Director, Mr Andrew Cameron OAM, viewed the facility and met with staff and patients.

Then, at the Birdsville Race Course, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the President of the Birdsville Race Club, Mr David Brook, and Mrs Nell Brook, attended the Birdsville Races at which the Governor-General presented the Birdsville Cup trophies to the connections of the winning horse Fast Fella.
