On Monday 23 January 2023, Their Excellencies General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) and Mrs Linda Hurley travelled from Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, to Loxton, South Australia.
On arrival, the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley, as guests of Mr Trevor Norton, Mayor, District Council of Loxton Waikerie, met with members of the South Australian State Emergency Service, and received an update on flood recovery efforts.
Later, the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley met with community members and local business owners impacted by recent flooding. Afterwards, the Governor-General, as Patron of the Australian Men’s Shed Association, and Mrs Hurley, met with members of the Loxton Men’s Shed.
Then, as guests of Mr Trevor Norton, the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley attended a working lunch with members of District Council of Loxton Waikerie.
In the afternoon, the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley travelled to Kingston-on-Murray, where, as guests of Ms Kara Voigt, Principal, they met with students, teachers and parents from Kingston-on-Murray Primary School.
Later, the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley, as guests of Ms Ella Winnall, Mayor, Berri Barmera Council, visited Lake Bonney to see the impact of flooding on local Aboriginal cultural sites.
Then, the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley, as guests of Ms Ella Winnall, met with staff and volunteers of Our Town Berri’s Flood Fest initiatives.
In the evening, the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley returned to Renmark, where as guests of Mr Peter Hunter, Mayor, Renmark Paringa Council, they attended a dinner with the Mayors of Loxton Waikerie and Berri Barmera.
