Christmas Island

On Saturday 29 September 2018, the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), and Lady Cosgrove, were welcomed to Christmas Island by Her Honour Mrs Natasha Griggs, Administrator of the Australian Indian Ocean Territories, at Christmas Island Airport. There, the Governor-General assisted in the unveiling of the plaque renaming the airport to the Gordon Bennett Airport.

Afterwards, Their Excellencies attended a dinner with community and business leaders at the Administrator’s residence.

In the evening, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove attended the opening ceremony for Territory Week at the Christmas Island Tea Gardens as guests of Mr Gordon Thomson, President, Shire of Christmas Island Council. During the event, Their Excellencies participated in celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of Christmas Island becoming an Australian territory.

Later, Their Excellencies attended a charity gala at Tai Jin House, as guests of Mr Steve Pereira, Chairperson, Organising Committee for the 60th Anniversary Celebrations.
