On Friday 25 April 2008, at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, the Administrator, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO attended the ANZAC Day Dawn Service.

Afterwards, in Sydney, the Administrator led the Sydney ANZAC Day March, followed by a Commemorative Service in Hyde Park. Later, at St Saviour's Church, Redfern, the Administrator attended the 2008 Redfern Commemorative Service. In Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, Their Excellencies, the Governor-General Major General Michael Jeffrey AC CVO MC and Mrs Marlena Jeffrey, as guests of the Australian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, His Excellency Mr Jeremy Bruer, attended an ANZAC Day Sunset Service at the British Club at which the Governor-General read the ANZAC Requiem and afterwards laid a wreath with Mrs Jeffery. Earlier, at the Residence of the Australian Ambassador, the Governor-General was represented at the ANZAC Day Dawn Service by the Official Secretary to the Governor-General, Mr Malcolm Hazell CVO. During the period Tuesday 22 April 2008 to Friday 25 April 2008, the Governor-General, as Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Defence Force, visited the Overwatch Battle Group (West) and Australian Army Training Team ??? Iraq in Southern Iraq; in Afghanistan, the RAAF Control and Reporting Centre; the Rotary Wing Group and the Force Level Logistic Asset ??? Afghanistan; and attended an ANZAC Day Dawn Service with the Special Forces Task Group and Reconstruction Task Force, at which he delivered an address and afterwards presented Major General Michael Hindmarsh, AO, CSC, Commander of Australian Forces in the Middle East Area of Operation, with the insignia of his award as an Officer of the Order of Australia in the Military Division.
