Governor-General visits Cairns and the Cape York region

The Governor-General met key representatives of organisations supporting the Cape York Agenda and saw their work in action during a visit to Cairns.

At the Cape York Institute for Policy and Leadership, Ms Bryce received briefings from the CEO of the Institute, Mr Duncan Murray, the CEO of the Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy, Ms Danielle Toon, the CEO of the Cape York Program, Ms Bernadine Denigan, and Chairman of Balkanu – Cape York Development Corporation, Mr Richard Aken.

The Agenda policy aims to ensure that Cape York people have the capabilities to choose a life they have reason to value through economic and social development.

Following the briefing, Ms Bryce visited Djarragun College in Gordonvale where she met Indigenous students involved in Direct Instruction program, which teaches literacy and numeracy to students through explicit instruction.

Ms Bryce also met students involved in hospitality, construction and automotive studies before enjoying a cultural performance and presenting awards to students and teachers.
