On Wednesday 4 July 2018, the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), and Lady Cosgrove, attended a Memorial Service for the Centenary of the Battle of Hamel at Le Hamel, France. During the service, the Governor-General delivered a commemorative address and Their Excellencies laid a wreath in memory of Australian soldiers.
Afterwards, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove met with guests and families, including descendants of those who served at the Battle of Hamel.
Later, Their Excellencies, as guests of Ms Caroline Bartlett, Director, and Mr Ken Corke, National Manager, Commemorations and War Graves, Department of Veterans’ Affairs, met with staff and visitors at the Sir John Monash Centre in Villers Brettonneux.
Then, at Albert-Picarde airport, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove were farewelled from France by His Excellency Brendan Berne, Australian Ambassador to the Republic of France.
In the afternoon, Their Excellencies attended a briefing by Mr Timothy Kane, Chargé d’Affaires, at the Westin Palace Hotel, in Madrid, Spain.
Afterwards, Their Excellencies met with His Majesty Felipe VI, King of Spain, at the Zarzuela Palace.
Later, Their Excellencies met with His Majesty Felipe VI and members of European Australian Business Council (EABC).
