On Monday, 29 October 2007, at Government House, Canberra, the Governor-General, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC, on behalf of the people and Government of Australia, sent messages of condolence and sympathy to the widow, family and comrades of Sergeant Matthew Locke MG, tragically killed while on active duty in Afghanistan.

Earlier, the Governor-General sent a message of condolence to the President of the United States of America, The Honourable George W. Bush, following the tragic loss of life and widespread damage caused by the devastating fires in California.
