On Monday 4 August 2008, in the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, at the Hohola Youth Development Centre, Port Moresby, Their Excellencies the Governor-General Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC and Mrs Marlena Jeffery, attended a ceremony at which the Governor-General unveiled a plaque and officially opened the centre's new classroom facilities.

In the afternoon, at Taurama Barracks, Their Excellencies, as guests of honour, attended a tree planting ceremony at St John's Chapel, followed by luncheon hosted by the Commander of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force, Commodore Peter Ilau DMS CBE. Afterwards, at the Australian High Commission, Their Excellencies attended a reception for Australian diplomatic and defence personnel and their families posted to Port Moresby. Earlier, at Brisbane International Airport, the Governor-General was represented at the departure from Australia of the President of the Republic of Nauru, His Excellency the Honourable Marcus Stephen, by Brigadier Christopher Hamilton ADC, an Honorary Aide-de-Camp.
