On Saturday 27 January 2018, at Moore Park, Sydney, the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), as Patron of Australian Rugby Union (ARU), and Lady Cosgrove as guests of Chief Executive Officer ARU, Ms Raelene Castle ONZM, attended the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Sydney Series.
In the evening, at Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne Park, Victoria, the Governor-General, as Chancellor of the Order of Australia, invested Ms Evonne Goolagong-Cawley AC MBE with the insignia of the Companion of the Order of Australia. Ms Goolagong-Cawley received Australia’s highest honour for eminent service to tennis as a player, at the national and international level, as an ambassador, supporter and advocate for the health, education and wellbeing of young Indigenous people through participation in sport, and as a role model.
Afterwards, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove as guests of Tennis Australia President and Chair, Ms Jayne Hrdlicka, attended the Australian Open Women’s Singles Final.
