On Thursday 24 April 2008, at St Andrew's Cathedral Sydney, NSW, the Administrator, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO attended the National Memorial Service to commemorate the loss of crew members from HMAS SYDNEY II, at which she read a message on behalf of the Governor-General.

Later at St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney, the Administrator attended a Mass to commemorate those who died in war. In the United Arab Emirates, the Governor-General, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC attended a reception at the Australian Embassy, hosted by the Australian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, His Excellency Mr Jeremy Bruer.
