On Saturday 23 February 2019, the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), and Lady Cosgrove, travelled to Townsville, Queensland, to meet with organisations and individuals involved in response and recovery efforts following the major flooding earlier in the month.
As guests of Wing Commander Mathew Green, Senior ADF Officer, RAAF Base Townsville, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove visited ADF personnel and their families from RAAF Base Townsville and the 5th Aviation Regiment, at RAAF Base Townsville.
Afterwards, as guests of Councillor Jenny Hill, Mayor, Townsville City Council, Their Excellencies met with staff at the Townsville Local Disaster Coordination Centre.
Later, the Governor General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of Mr David Hermann, Assistant Commissioner, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, met with volunteers and emergency workers at the State Emergency Service Headquarters.
Then, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of Councillor Hill, attended a community barbeque at Townsville Bunnings, and met with members of Team Rubicon Australia.
Afterwards, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of Brigadier Scott Winter AM, Commander, 3rd Brigade, visited ADF personnel and their families at Lavarack Barracks.
In the afternoon, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of Mr Tony Mooney, Chair, Townsville Hospital Health Services, met with staff at the Townsville Hospital.
