On Tuesday 29 April 2008, in Sydney, NSW, the Administrator, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO officially opened the Aboriginal Health Research Conference 'Strong Foundations, Strong Futures' on behalf of the Coalition for Research to Improve Aboriginal Health.

Later, at the Hilton Hotel, Sydney, the Administrator, as Guest of Honour, attended the 2008 Ermenegildo Zegna Wool Awards Dinner. In Jerusalem, Israel, the Governor-General, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC received calls by the Vice Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the State of Israel, Ms Tzipi Livni MK; the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Binyamin Netanyahu MK and the Chief of Staff and Head of Mission, United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation, Major General Ian Gordon AO. Afterwards, at the Prime Minister's Office, the Governor-General called on the Prime Minister of the State of Israel, Mr Ehud Olmert MK. Later, at Yad Vashem, the Governor-General toured the National Holocaust Museum of Israel where he laid a wreath in the Hall of Remembrance. In the evening, at the President's Residence, the Governor-General and Her Excellency Mrs Marlena Jeffery, attended a State Dinner hosted by the President of the State of Israel, Mr Shimon Peres. Earlier, in Jerusalem, Mrs Jeffery toured Haram al Sharif, the Mount of Olives, the Garden of Gethsemane, Mount Scopus, the Church of All Nations, the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Via Dolorosa. At Perth International Airport, the Administrator was represented at the arrival in Australia of the King of Malaysia, His Majesty Al-Wathiqu Billah Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, by Wing Commander Russell Page, an Honorary Aide-de-Camp. Earlier, the Administrator, on behalf of the people and government of Australia, issued a statement of condolence and sympathy to the widow and family of Lance Corporal Jason Marks tragically killed while on active duty in Afghanistan. The Governor-General sent a message of condolence and sympathy to the widow and parents of the late Lance Corporal Jason Marks.
