Visit to Belgium and the United Kingdom

On Monday 28 July 2014, at Toronto Avenue Cemetery, Belgium, the Governor-General, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) and Lady Cosgrove laid commemorative crosses inscribed with messages from Australian children on the graves of Australian soldiers.

Afterwards, in Comines-Warneton, as guest of the Mayor, Mr Gilbert Deleu, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove visited the Plug Street Interpretive Centre.

Later, in Ieper, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Curator, Mr Piet Chielens, visited the In Flanders Fields Museum.

In the evening, in London, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove were welcomed to the United Kingdom by the Australian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, His Excellency the Honourable Alexander Downer AC and Australian High Commission staff.

Afterwards, at Stoke Lodge, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove attended a dinner hosted in their honour by the Australian High Commissioner.

Earlier, at Brisbane International Airport, the Governor-General was represented at the departure from Australia of the President of the Republic of Kiribati, His Excellency the Honourable Anote Tong MP, by Colonel Dennis Scanlan CSM RFD ADC, Honorary Aide-de-Camp; and the President of the Republic of Nauru, His Excellency the Honourable Baron Divavesi Waqa MP, by Commander Peter Tedman DSM OAM ADC RAN, Honorary Aide-de-Camp; and at Sydney International Airport, at the transit through Australia of the Governor-General of New Zealand, His Excellency Lieutenant General the Right Honourable Sir Jeremiah Mateparae GNZM QSO, by Commander Theodore Wynberg ADC RAN, Honorary Aide-de-Camp.
