Visit to North Queensland

On Tuesday 13 May 2014, in Yungaburra, the Governor-General, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the President, Afghanistan Avenue of Honour Association, Mr Raymond Byrnes, and Founders, Mr Gordon Chuck and Mrs Susan Chuck, attended a commemoration ceremony and met with community representatives.

Afterwards, at the Yungaburra Community Hall, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove attended a community reception hosted in their honour.

Later, at Apunipima Health Council, Cairns, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Chief Executive Office, Mr Cleveland Fagan, and Business Strategy Advisor, Ms Paula Arnol, received a brief on Indigenous health programs in Cape York.

Then, at the Cape York Institute for Policy and Leadership, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Chair, Mr Noel Pearson, and Chief Executive Officer, Ms Fiona Jose, received a briefing on welfare reform programs in Cape York.

Afterwards, at the Cairns Base Hospital, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Chair, Mr Bob Norman and Chief Executive, Ms Julie Hartley-Jones, met with patients and staff and viewed the new rehabilitation ward.

In the evening, at the Cairns Regional Council Civic Reception Rooms, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Mayor of the Cairns Regional Council, Councillor Bob Manning OAM and Mrs Claire Manning, attended a civic reception hosted in their honour.
