Visit to Wagga Wagga

On Sunday 17 February 2013, in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, the Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO, as guest of the Mayor of the Wagga Wagga City Council, Councillor Rod Kendall, launched the Junior Teams World Championship Gumi Race, and met with crew members.

Afterwards, in North Wagga Wagga, the Governor-General and Mr Michael Bryce AM AE met with community members and visited local residents affected by the 2012 floods.

Later, at Wagga Beach, the Governor-General and Mr Bryce met with members of the State Emergency Service, Volunteer Rescue Association, the Rural Fire Service and the Australian Defence Force, before the Governor-General presented trophies to the Defence, Junior and Open winning teams of World Championship Gumi Race.

In the afternoon, at the Ngurra Youth Hub, Ashmont, the Governor-General and Mr Bryce, as guests of Wiradjuri Elder, Aunty Isabelle Reid, attended an afternoon tea with Wiradjuri Elders and youth leaders.

Then, at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, the Governor-General and Mr Bryce, as guests of the Director of the EH Graham Centre for Agricultural Innovation, Professor Deirdre Lemerle, met with PhD students and viewed the Rhyziolysimeter Laboratory, the veterinary clinical centre, the phytotron facility and the national life sciences building.

In the evening, the Governor-General and Mr Bryce hosted a community reception at the Wagga Wagga Shire Council Chambers.
