On Wednesday 6 February 2008, the Governor-General, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC sent the following message to Her Majesty The Queen on the occasion of the 56th Anniversary of Her Accession to the Throne: "It gives me great pleasure, on behalf of the people of Australia, to send to Your Majesty loyal and affectionate greetings on the Anniversary of Your Accession to the Throne??.

Earlier, at Government House, Canberra, the Governor-General, received the Australian High Commissioner-designate in the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Ms Kathy Klugman. Afterwards, the Governor-General administered the requisite Affirmation of Office to the Honourable Dr Michael Kelly AM MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support. Later, the Governor-General hosted a luncheon for Secretaries of Commonwealth Government Departments and Agency Heads: Mr David Borthwick PSM; Dr Peter Boxall AO; Ms Lynelle Briggs; Mr Michael Carmody AO; Mr Ian Carnell; Ms Jane Halton PSM; Dr Jeffrey Harmer; Dr Ken Henry AC; Mr Michael L'Estrange AO; Mr??Ken Matthews AO; Mr Ian McPhee PSM; Mr Andrew Metcalfe; Mr Paul O'Sullivan; Mr Mark Paterson AO; Ms Lisa Paul PSM; Mr Brian Pink; Ms Patricia Scott; Dr Peter Shergold AC; Mr Mark Sullivan AO; Mr Mike Taylor AO; Mr Peter Varghese; Dr Ian Watt; and Ms Helen Williams AO. In the afternoon, the Governor-General received the Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister, Mr David Epstein. In the evening, at the Centre for Defence Strategic Studies, Weston Creek, ACT, the Governor-General, as the guest of honour, delivered the address at the Governor-General's Dinner.
