On Wednesday, 6 June 2007, the Governor-General, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC sent messages to the Governor of Victoria, Professor David de Kretser AC, and the Premier of Victoria, the Honourable Mr??Stephen Bracks, expressing sympathy and concern on behalf of all Australians for the victims and families and the support personnel affected by the tragic train disaster near Kerang, Victoria.

Earlier, the Governor-General sent a message of sympathy and condolence on behalf of the government and the People of Australia to the President of the Republic of Malawi His Excellency Dr Bingu wa Mutharika, following the passing of the First Lady, Her??Excellency Madam Ethel Mutharika. Afterwards, at Government House, Canberra, the Governor-General hosted to lunch Professor Sue Serjeantson AO, Executive Secretary, Australian Academy of Science. In the evening, at Brisbane International Airport, the Governor-General was represented at the arrival in Australia of the King of Malaysia, His Majesty Al-Wathiqu Billah Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, by Group Captain Brian Duddington AM, an Honorary Aide-de-Camp.
