Building bridges across communities makes for a better Australia
Making connections with the wider community is what drives Canberran Mainul Haque OAM.
“Building bridges reduces misinformation, reduces the gap between us and increases social cohesion. It makes for a better Australia.”
Awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the multicultural community of Canberra, Mr Haque has spent many years working on behalf of the Canberra Muslim community, and serving as a representative in multicultural affairs, political engagement and interfaith initiatives.
His wife and family’s support have been central to his ability to contribute more widely.
“Without family support, nobody can do social service or community service. I humbly acknowledge my wife Parven Haque’s contribution. I've been married 30 years and I sometimes feel overwhelmed with gratitude to Almighty for the life he has given me and the partner he has given me.”
Recognising the contribution of people from across the diversity of the Australian community is essential, he says.
“When you have this kind of recognition, such as the Order of Australia, it makes the community feel good, it builds community pride. It also dispels some of the media stereotyping that we have – that people from migrant communities are not doing enough. That’s not the case. So this helps in dispelling some of the myths.”
Mr Haque has nominated others for the Order of Australia and will continue to do so. He strongly encourages the community to be involved.
“Please nominate people who you know who have made a difference in our communities in Canberra, outside Canberra, in Australia. It could be anywhere, in any field – community service, professional accomplishment, professional services.”
“Be they Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Buddhists, black, brown, white. Please nominate someone that you know who has made a difference.”
“Together we can make a difference for all of us.”
Mainul Haque OAM was invested in the Order of Australia at the Spring 2023 ceremonies at Government House, Canberra.
