Cecilia Gore-Birch OAM
Jaru/Kija woman Cecilia Gore-Birch OAM has been inspired by an inner need to help others in her community.
She is co-chairperson of the Indigenous Carbon Industry Network and Wildfire Resilient Landscape Network, and director of the International Savanna Fire Management Initiative, Aboriginal Clean Energy Project, and Kimberly Cultural Connections Pty Ltd – of which she is also the owner.
She is the director of the East Kimberly Football Association, and a board member of the Kununurra Basketball Association.
For her work, Ms Gore-Birch was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the Indigenous community of Western Australia.
“The greatest impact of the work that I do has been the profound influence on strengthening the community and bridging the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians,” she says.
“My work in conservation and land management, as well as my participation on various boards, has ensured that Aboriginal people continue to have a voice and are engaged in leading critical conversations.”
Ms Gore-Birch's previous roles included chairperson at the East Kimberly College Board, Balanggarra Aboriginal Corporation, Aarnja and NAILSMA, director at the Kimberly Land Council and Original Power, and other roles at the Indigenous Advisory Committee, the Threatened Species Recovery Hub, and the Kimberly Women's Cultural Strategy.
Her work has been inspired by those who came before her, she says.
“The elders, the old people who have inspired me with their perseverance, play a significant role in my motivation. Despite facing numerous hardships, they continually pushed forward, demonstrating resilience and strength,” Ms Gore-Birch says.
“The enjoyment in my work comes from the impact I can make in my community, particularly in bridging the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
“I also would like to thank the person who nominated me and believed in the work and my commitment to helping others where I can.”
