Concetta Perna AM

Concetta Perna AM has dedicated her life to building connections within the Italian-Australian community, promoting the Italian language and culture, empowering women and improving elderly well-being.

She is the president of the National Italian-Australian Women’s Association, the Dante Alighieri Society and was formerly vice-president of the Lucanian Association in Sydney.

Her tireless efforts have resulted in her appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the Australian Italian community.

“I feel accomplished when expanding perspectives on migration, society, and people in public debates,” Mrs Perna says.

“Through volunteering with women's and cultural associations, I strive to foster cultural heritage and a sense of belonging. While volunteering at nursing homes, I provided comfort to the elderly, ensuring they experienced the dignity they rightly deserve. Writing books on migration gives migrants a voice in broader conversations.”

Mrs Perna’s recognition isn’t the end of a road – she is treating it as a spur to keep going, she explains.

“I felt deeply honoured, humbled and grateful for the recognition and opportunities it brings. It inspires me to push the boundaries of what is possible and to contribute even more passionately to our community and beyond,” she says.

“I am eager to make further contributions that reflect the values and standards expressed by this award. It will motivate me to continue striving for excellence.

“It represents a significant personal milestone and a testament to the support of the committees of Niawa, Dante Alighieri Society Sydney, Scalabrini Villages, Gruppo dell’Amicizia in Memoria di Enrica Inglese, Associazione I Nonni, and Edizioni Farinelli.

“I’m grateful to my family and friends for their unwavering encouragement and support on this journey. I dedicate this award to my 4-month-old grandson, Alexander Rocco, hoping that he grows up to be a proud and exemplary citizen of our beautiful nation."
