Donna Rousham OAM

For Donna Rousham OAM, witnessing a child with disability emerge over time to become confident in the water and enjoy learning to swim is inspiring.

Her program Starfish Swim Group, which she founded in 2005, has grown to more than 100 children with disabilities. It has had profoundly positive outcomes for the children within it, as well as their families.

For her tireless work and dedication, she has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to people with a disability.

“My motivation is our parents’ regular feedback, who are often emotional when they watch the steps of progress their child makes in the pool. Behaviours change, listening improves and health improves, even at home!” Ms Rousham says.

“I receive referrals from health professionals which makes me proud that they recognise our programs worth. The results are rewarding and why I am so passionate about what I do.”

Ms Rousham has been a volunteer at Variety The Children’s Charity in the Northern Territory for over 30 years, and was a committee member and volunteer at the Down Syndrome Association of the Northern Territory Inc.

She is no stranger to awards in her local community, having received the Senior of Excellence Award in 2020, and the Fitzgerald Award for Social Change at the NT Human Rights Awards in 2019.

“I was stunned, emotional and humbled when I heard I was to be recognised in the Order. It is heartwarming to be recognised and rewarded for the hard work and outcomes achieved over 20 years,” she says.

“I would like to thank my Austswim Teachers, Tania and Robyn, because without their dedication, commitment and professionalism we would not get the amazing results we achieve.

“I also acknowledge our pool venue sponsors, Mimik-Ga Centre and Henbury School who are so critical to our program, Variety NT for sponsoring our kids, my husband Paul for his on-going support and understanding and lastly my nominator.”
