Emily Carter AM

“Creating a better life for the next generation” is the powerful motivation that has driven Emily Carter AM to raise the voices of vulnerable women and children in her community.

Ms Carter has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant services to the Indigenous community through social and economic advocacy initiatives.

“My parents were stolen generation and I want to create opportunities such as our Early Learning Centre, Marulu and Strengthening Families Team which give children and their families all the supports needed for the best life possible,” Ms Carter says.

“Our postcode shouldn’t determine the quality of care and level of services we receive, regardless of our life circumstances.

“Throughout my working life I’ve demanded we lead by example, create innovative solutions and showcase ‘what good looks like’, lifting women up and providing them with a sense of hope of possibility.”

Like so many recipients in the Order of Australia, Emily Carter has not been driven by recognition: “I was shocked and nervous. I don’t put myself up for this type of recognition. This is not why I do the work.

“I would like to thank whoever nominated me and those who provided references.

“The work continues regardless.”
