Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea; Isurava, Papua New Guinea; Kokoda, Papua New Guinea
On Tuesday 25 April 2017, at Bomana War Cemetery, Port Moresby, the Governor-General, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), and Lady Cosgrove attended an ANZAC Day dawn service, at which the Governor-General delivered the commemorative address, and later, together with Lady Cosgrove and one of the last living Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, 91 year old Mr Havala Lavla, laid a wreath at the Monument to the Fallen.
Afterwards, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove viewed the memorial of Flight Sergeant W.M.P. Cosgrove accompanied by Ms Madeline Huxtable.
Later, at the Isurava Memorial, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of a representative of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Mr Lance Johnson, and Australian Defence Staff, Lieutenant Colonel John Dempsey, attended an ANZAC Day ceremony and viewed the Private Bruce Kingsbury VC memorial.
Then, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove met with Australian trekkers walking the Kokoda Track.
Afterwards, at Kokoda Station, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Governor of Oro Province, the Honourable Gary Juffa MP, attended a ceremonial welcome.
Later, at the Kokoda Museum, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of Australian Defence Staff, Lieutenant Colonel Sean Benporath, viewed the Kokoda Track and New Guinea Campaign exhibits.
Then, at the Memorial to Australian Soldiers at the Kokoda Track, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove laid a wreath and met with members of the local community.
In the afternoon, at the Australian High Commissioner’s residence, Port Moresby, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Australian High Commissioner to the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, His Excellency Mr Bruce Davis AM PSM, presented certificates to Australia Awards Scholarship recipients.
Afterwards, at Rita Flynn Netball Centre, Boroko, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Minister for Sports, the Honourable Justin Tkatchenko MP, and the Chair of Netball PNG, Ms Julienne Leka-Maliaki, viewed a Papua New Guinea mixed netball exhibition match.
Later, at the Australian High Commission, Port Moresby, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove met with Australian High Commission staff.
In the evening, at Airways Hotel, Port Moresby, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove hosted a dinner for Australian High Commission staff.
