Bathurst Island, NT

On Monday 20 February 2017, at the Murrupurtiyanuwu Catholic Primary School, Bathurst Island, the Governor-General, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Chairman of the Tiwi Land Council, Mr Gibson Farmer Illortaminni, received a traditional welcome and met with students and staff.

Afterwards, at the Patakijiyali Museum, Bathurst Island, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the 2017 Senior Australian of the Year, Sister Anne Gardiner AM, viewed the displays and the bronze statue of Mathius Ullunguru. Mr Ullunguru captured Australia’s first prisoner of World War II.

In the afternoon, at the Mantiyupwi Motel, Bathurst Island, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of Mr Gibson Farmer Illortaminni, attended a civic reception.

Afterwards, at the Nguiu Medical Clinic, Bathurst Island, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Chairman of the Mantiyupwi Family Trust, Mr Wesley Kerinauia, viewed the facilities and met with staff and patients.

Later, at the Tiwi Design Art Centre, Bathurst Island, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of Mr Wesley Kerinauia, viewed the displays and met with local artists.

Then, at the Calvary Aged Care Facility, Bathurst Island, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of Mr Wesley Kerinauia, viewed the facilities and met with staff and residents.

Afterwards, at the Wurrumiyanga Oval, Bathurst Island, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of Mr Wesley Kerinauia, viewed a Tiwi Islands Football League competition game where the Governor-General conducted the coin-toss.
