On Friday 3 February 2017, at 2 RPH radio station, Glebe, the Governor-General, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), and Lady Cosgrove viewed the facilities and met with staff, following which the Governor-General broadcasted ‘live-to-air’ content and Lady Cosgrove recorded a briefing for Ablequest. The 2RPH radio station has been broadcasting in Sydney since 1983 and transmits 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Listeners include people who are aged, disabled, non-English speaking and also those who are time poor.

Afterwards, at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Darlinghurst, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Executive Director, Professor John Mattick AO, met with staff and patients. The Garvan Institute of Medical Research is one of the leading medical research institutes in Australia with more than 600 scientists and PhD students working across six major research divisions.

Later, at the Children’s Cancer Institute and the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Kensington, the Governor-General, as Patron, and Lady Cosgrove met with staff, patients and families. The Children’s Cancer Institute was established in May 1976 and remains the only independent medical research institute in Australia solely devoted to research into the causes, prevention, improved treatments, and cures for different forms of childhood cancer.

In the afternoon, at the Chris Obrien Lifehouse, Camperdown, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Chief Executive Officer, Ms Eileen Hannagan met with staff, researchers and patients. The Chris O’Brien Lifehouse is one of two comprehensive cancer centres in Australia and is the largest cancer clinical trial centre in NSW. Each year the Lifehouse screens, checks, diagnoses and treats more than 40,000 patients.
