On Thursday 8 December 2016, at Government House, Canberra, the Governor-General, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), presided at a meeting of the Federal Executive Council.

Earlier, at the Australian Defence Force Academy, Campbell, the Governor-General, as Commander-in-Chief, and Lady Cosgrove, attended the 2016 Australian Defence Force Academy graduation parade, at which the Governor General reviewed the parade, presented the Commander-in-Chief medal and delivered an address.

Afterwards, at Government House, the Governor-General met with students completing their Certificate IV in Indigenous Leadership as they undertook a tour of Government House.

Later, the Governor-General received the High Commissioner-designate to the Solomon Islands, Mr Rod Brazier.

In the evening, at the National Gallery of Australia, Parkes, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Chairman, National Gallery of Australia Council, Mr Allan Myers AC QC, attended the official opening of the Versailles Treasures from the Palace exhibition, at which the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove led the first public viewing.

Earlier, the Governor-General met with students from the Bairnsdale Specialist School, VIC, as they undertook a tour of Government House as a part of their visit to Canberra.
