On Wednesday 7 September 2016, in Rio de Janeiro, the Governor-General, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the Australian Ambassador to Brazil, His Excellency John Richardson, attended a lunch with Australian Paralympic Committee officials.

Afterwards, at the Itamaraty Palace, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, His Excellency Michel Temer, attended a welcome reception for visiting Heads of State and Heads of Government.

In the evening, at Maracana Stadium, the Governor-General, as Patron of the Australian Paralympic Committee, and Lady Cosgrove attended the Opening Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
