On Saturday 6 August 2016, at Lagoa Stadium, the Governor-General, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), as Patron of the Australian Olympic Committee, and Lady Cosgrove, supported Australian rowers competing in the Women’s Single Sculls and Men’s Pair heats.
Afterwards, at Copacabana Beach, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove attended the Women’s Beach Volleyball match between Australia and Costa Rica, which the Australian pairing of Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy won in two sets.
Later, at the Olympic Hockey Centre, Deodora, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove attended the Men’s Hockey pool match between Australia and New Zealand, which Australia won 2 goals to 1.
Then, at the Deodora Basketball Stadium, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove attended the Women’s Basketball preliminary round match between Australia and Brazil, which Australia won 84-66.
Afterwards, at Deodora Stadium, the Governor-General, as Patron of Australian Rugby Union, and Lady Cosgrove, attended the Women’s Rugby Sevens pool match between Australia and Fiji, which Australia won 36-0.
In the evening, at the Olympic Aquatics Centre, Barra de Tijuka, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove attended the swimming, at which Mack Horton won Australia’s first gold medal for the 2016 Olympic Games in the Men’s 400m Freestyle, and the Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay Team won gold and broke the World Record.
