ANZAC Dawn Service, Canberra; ANZAC Day March, Sydney; ANZAC Day Commemoration Service; Coloured Digger Commemorative Service; State visit to Papua New Guinea
On Thursday 25 April 2013, at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, the Administrator of the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia, Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, attended the ANZAC Day pre-Dawn Service, where Canberra Actress, Ms Leith Arundel, read excerpts from letters and diaries written by Australian Soldiers; and VC recipient, Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith VC MG, read accounts of Australian Service in Afghanistan.
Afterwards, the Administrator and Mr Michael Bryce AM AE, attended the ANZAC Day Dawn Service.
Later, at The Cenotaph, Sydney, the Administrator was presented with a sprig of rosemary by Junior Legatee, Ms Mia Douglas, before leading the Sydney ANZAC Day March.
Then, at the Sydney Town Hall, the Administrator and Sir Nicholas Shehadie AC OBE, viewed the remainder of the march.
Afterwards, at the ANZAC Memorial, Hyde Park, the Administrator, accompanied by Sir Nicholas, read the ‘Commemoration of the Fallen’ at the ANZAC Day Commemoration Service.
Later, at Redfern Park, the Administrator and Sir Nicholas laid the first wreath at an ANZAC Day Memorial Service, before attending the Coloured Digger Commemorative Service at the Redfern Community Centre.
Earlier, at the Bomana War Cemetery, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, the Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO, as guest of the Senior Vice-President of the Port Moresby RSL Sub-Branch, Group Captain Steve Fielder AM, attended the ANZAC Day Dawn Service and delivered the keynote address. Then, with the Governor-General of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, Sir Michael Ogio GCL GCMC OBE, laid a wreath at the Cross of Sacrifice.
Afterwards, at the Isurava Memorial, Isurava, the Governor-General, as guest of Lieutenant Colonel Cam Gee, visited the memorial to Private Bruce Kingsbury VC, delivered an address and laid a floral tribute, before meeting with trekkers and locals walking the Kokoda Track.
Later, at the Kokoda Memorial, Kokoda, the Governor-General, as guest of Lieutenant Colonel Dave Buller, visited the Kokoda Museum, laid a floral tribute at the Memorial to Australian Soldiers and met with members of the local community.
Then, at the Airways Hotel, Port Moresby, the Governor-General, accompanied by the Honourable Jason Clare MP and Mr Scott Morrison MP, hosted a reception for young Australians from The Mateship Trek, and Australian Defence Force members from Soldier On, who recently completed the WWII Black Cat Trail.
Earlier, at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, Mr Bryce, as Patron, accompanied the RAAF Association for the ANZAC Day March.
Afterwards, at the Southern Cross Club, Phillip, Mr Bryce attended the RAAF Association ANZAC Day lunch.
