Governor-General visits UNHCR Za'atri refugee camp

The Governor-General listened to women and children refugees’ stories of survival after fleeing violence in Syria during a visit to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Za’atri refugee camp in northern Jordan.

Ms Bryce and Mr Bryce were met by the Head of UNHCR Jordan, Mr Andrew Harper, and escorted to a Registration Office for a briefing on the camp.

Later, the Governor-General addressed local and international media and commended Jordan’s continuing support of Syrian refugees. Ms Bryce also said that Australia had contributed $20 million in assistance for Syrian refugees.

The UNHCR estimated in August that 61,000 Syrian refugees have crossed the border into Jordan and have registered, or are waiting to register, with the organisation.
