On Wednesday 20 May 2009, in Coober Pedy, South Australia, the Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce AC and Mr Michael Bryce AM AE, as guests of the Manager, Mr Yanni Athenasiadis, toured the Umoona Opal Mine and Museum.
Afterwards, the Governor-General and Mr Bryce, as guests of the Chairperson of the Governing Committee, Mr Ian Crombie, met with residents of the Umoona Indigenous Aged Care Facility. Later, at the Umoona Community Hall, the Governor-General and Mr Bryce attended an afternoon tea with the Umoona indigenous community. In the evening, at the Desert Cave Hotel, the Governor-General and Mr Bryce attended a Civic Reception hosted in their honour by the Mayor of Coober Pedy, Councillor Steven Baines.
