On Wednesday, 21 January 2009, at Concord Hospital, Sydney, the Administrator, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO and Sir Nicholas Shehadie AC OBE, as guests of the Asbestos Disease Research Foundation, attended the Official Opening of the Bernie Banton Centre.

Afterwards, at St Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney, the Administrator and Sir Nicholas attended the State Funeral for the late Mrs Nancy-Bird Walton AO OBE, at which the Administrator read the first lesson. Earlier, at the Ministry of Foreign Trade, Abu Dhabi, the Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce AC, met with United Arab Emirates Minister of Foreign Trade, Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi. Afterwards, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, the Governor-General and Mr Michael Bryce AM AE, as guests of the Chief Executive Officer of Masdar Future Energy Company, Dr Sultan Al Jaber, toured the World Future Energy Summit exhibition, at which the Governor-General delivered an address at the closing session. Later, the Governor-General and Mr Bryce were received by the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. In the evening, at the residence of the Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, His Excellency Mr Jeremy Bruer, the Governor-General and Mr Bryce attended a reception hosted in their honour.
