On Sunday 14 December 2008, the Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce AC and Mr Michael Bryce AM AE departed Australia on a State Visit to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.

Earlier, the Proclamation assuming the Administration of the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia was signed by the Governor of New South Wales, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO. In the afternoon, in Dili, Timor-Leste, the Governor-General and Mr Bryce received a briefing on the Timor-Leste Police Development Program by the Commander, International Deployment Group, East Timor, Commander Grant Edwards. Afterwards, the Governor-General and Mr Bryce received a briefing on the International Stabilisation Force by the Commander, International Stabilisation Force, Brigadier Mark Holmes MVO, and attended an informal dinner with soldiers of 5 RAR.
