On Friday 20 June 2008, at Government House, Canberra, Their Excellencies, the Governor-General, Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC and Mrs Marlena Jeffery, received a farewell call from the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain, His Excellency Mr Antonio Cosano and Mrs Marisol Nuno Vicente.

Later, Their Excellencies received the President of the Republic of Kiribati, His Excellency Mr Anote Tong. The President was accompanied by: the Secretary to Cabinet, Mr Taam Biribo; the Secretary of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Ms Tessie Eria Lambourne; the Director of Labour, Ministry for Labour and Human Resources, Mr Ngutu Awira; and the Australian High Commissioner in the Republic of Kiribati, Ms Anne Quinane. In the afternoon, the Governor-General received the Australian Ambassador-designate to the Republic of Poland and the Czech Republic, Ms Ruth Pearce. Afterwards, the Governor-General received a farewell call by the Chief of Navy, Vice-Admiral Russ Shalders AO CSC RAN. Later, at Canberra Girl's Grammar School, ACT, Mrs Jeffery, representing the Governor-General, officially opened the annual conference of the Alliance of Girls' Schools (Australasia). Earlier, at Darwin International Airport, the Governor-General was represented at the arrival in Australia by the President of the Democratic Republic of East Timor, His Excellency Dr Jose Ramos-Horta, by Captain Vaughn Rixon CSC RAN an Honourary Aide-de-Camp.
