On Tuesday 13 May 2008, at the Australian Vietnam National Forces Memorial, Canberra, Their Excellencies, the Governor-General Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC and Mrs Marlena Jeffery attended the 40th Anniversary of Coral/Balmoral Remembrance Service, at which the Governor-General laid a wreath.
Afterwards, at the Lobby Restaurant, Canberra, Their Excellencies, as guests of the Lowy Institute for International Policy and the Myer Foundation, attended a lunch at which the Governor-General officially launched the Myer Foundation Melanesia Program in Canberra. In the evening, at Admiralty House, Sydney, the Governor-General, as Patron-in-Chief, and Mrs Jeffery hosted a reception for members of The Global Foundation. Later, Their Excellencies hosted to dinner members of the Foundation: Mr Tim Besley AC and Ms Sarah Harrington; Professor Gavin Brown AO and Mrs Diane Brown; Mr Patrick Dodson; Ms Karyn Freeman; The Right Reverend Dr Peter Hollingworth AC OBE and Mrs Ann Hollingworth; Mr Steve Howard and Ms Florence Forzy; Mr Alasdair Macleod and Mrs Prudence Macleod; Mr David Murray AO and Mrs Stephanie Murray; Emeritus Professor Sir Gustav Nossal AC CBE; Mr George Polites AC CMG MBE and Ms Lola Boyce; Ms Shannon Powell; Lieutenant General John Sanderson AC (Retd) and Mrs Lorraine Sanderson; and Mr Tony Shepherd. In the afternoon, the Governor-General sent a message of condolence and support to the President of the People's Republic of China following the tragic loss of life and widespread damage caused by the devastating earthquake in Sichuan Province.
