Good morning.

I am delighted to welcome you to Government House on what is a very special day in the lives of the 26 men and women on parade.

Please join me in congratulating our recruits.

It is also a proud day for families, friends and colleagues, the AFP and our nation.

I want to speak directly to the recruits.

Shortly, you will take an oath or make an affirmation and graduate into one of the finest institutions in the country.

An institution that has a proud and rich history.

An institution that espouses values of integrity, commitment, excellence, fairness, accountability, trust and respect.

An institution that, at its core, is about community — protecting the lives of Australians, both here and overseas, and keeping us safe across so many aspects of our lives.

As soon-to-be Constables in the Australian Federal Police, you will be entrusted with a great responsibility and assume a special status.

The training you have received over the past 26-weeks has prepared you well for the role. Indeed, I’m sure you cannot wait to hit the road!

Much is asked of our Police men and women.

The business of policing is multi-faceted and, at times, stressful, challenging and dangerous.

Yet, as Police Officers, you are not deterred.

You do what is required of you, to protect us and to keep us safe.

And that is a selfless contribution.

Beneath that uniform, however, Police men and women are just people.

They might be strong and dedicated but even the strongest and bravest are still vulnerable and human.

In acknowledging that, we ask that you take care of yourselves and of each other.

Ladies and gentlemen …

Those who have heard me speak before at graduation ceremonies will know the importance I attach to acknowledging the support of families and the trainers and mentors.

They, too, are part of the success being celebrated today.

I extend a big thank you to the families and the personnel who have encouraged and trained the recruits and been with them every step of the way.

A final word to the recruits: make today count for something bigger.

You are enormously capable.

That is why you are here.

Your trainers and mentors, and the AFP, have recognised your potential.

Again, congratulations; enjoy this moment.

Good luck as you embark on your career, always conscious of the community you serve.
