Seeing fish dying in rice paddies as a young man in China inspired Professor Deli Chen AO to a research career that has seen him become an internationally recognised leader in nitrogen fertiliser use efficiency and its impacts on global food security, environmental quality and climate change.

Appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia, Professor Chen’s research has led to increased crop productivity while minimising environmental damage. 

“I find fulfilment in tackling scientific challenges, working with young enthusiastic researchers, and enhancing collaboration and knowledge exchange between Australia and China,” Professor Chen says.

“My efforts extend to fostering close scientific collaborations particularly with Chinese researchers and facilitating many Australia-China scientific exchanges.

“I have dedicated myself to mentoring the next generation of researchers.”

Professor Chen says he was thrilled by his recognition in the Order of Australia.

“It’s a great honour and I am truly humbled as a Chinese-origin agricultural scientist.”
