Sue Bowen OAM

Sue Bowen’s advocacy, passion and commitment has encouraged many to realise that they can still have an active and healthy lifestyle after a cancer diagnosis.

Her work over more than two decades has resulted in her being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to women, and to dragon boating.

“As I regained my fitness and health, I loved competing nationally and internationally with both breast cancer teams and sports teams. I am now more focused on coaching and enjoy being able to share my passion for the sport, while advocating the benefits of physical activity with those newly diagnosed,” Ms Bowen says.

“I love seeing people realise ‘I can do this.’”

Ms Bowen says she was overwhelmed and honoured to be awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia.

“I have loved what I do, primarily as an advocate for the benefits dragon boating can provide to those going through a diagnosis. I personally have benefited from the tremendous support I have received, and friendships made, over many years through the sport of dragon boating.

“I would like to thank those who nominated me. I have been very fortunate that during my journey since my cancer diagnosis I have had wonderful experiences as a dragon boater and treasure the friendships I have made. I thank you all for your support and friendship.”
