Appointment of Official Secretary to the Governor-General
Federal Executive Council has approved the appointment Mr Gerard Martin PSM as the next Official Secretary to the Governor-General.
The appointment process was managed by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C). The Governor-General-designate, Ms Sam Mostyn AC, has agreed to the appointment of Mr Martin to serve as her Official Secretary.
In addition to welcoming the appointment, the Governor-General acknowledged the service of Mr Paul Singer MVO as he finishes his term as Official Secretary.
“Mr Singer has served with distinction and has provided dedicated and selfless support to four Governors-General during his 18 years at Government House. I am sure that I speak for each of my predecessors in recognising the impact he has had during his tenure, thanking him for his significant contributions and valuable service, and wishing him well for his future endeavours.” the Governor-General said.
Mr Martin’s appointment will commence on 1 July 2024 to coincide with Ms Mostyn’s swearing-in. Mr Martin has more than 25 years’ experience across government. He is currently First Assistant Secretary at the PM&C, having led the delivery of the ministerial, parliamentary, communication and international visit functions, delivering support to the Prime Minister and portfolio Ministers, as well as holding responsibility for the management of the Prime Minister's official residences. Mr Martin has held other senior positions in PM&C, including with responsibility for matters relating to government administration and operations. In 2023, he was awarded the Public Service Medal for outstanding public service in delivering advice and support to the Prime Minister and his Office, and to PM&C.
