75th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz

The Governor-General and Mrs Hurley will represent Australia at a commemorative ceremony in Israel to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

The World Holocaust Forum will be held at Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Centre, on Thursday, 23 January and be attended by around 50 world leaders.

“The importance of remembering and reflecting on the atrocities of the Holocaust has not diminished in the 75 years since Auschwitz was liberated,” the Governor-General said.

“We remember and reflect both to honour the victims – the millions upon millions of lives lost, the families destroyed – and to learn. To learn so that we remain vigilant to ensure this darkest chapter in history never repeats.

“Linda and I are proud to represent Australia at this historic and important occasion.”

During the visit the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley will also meet separately with the President of Israel, Reuven Rivlin.

In addition to commemorative events, the program will recognise and reinforce the strong relationship enjoyed by Australia and Israel, with a particular emphasis on R&D, technology, entrepreneurship, and trade and investment between the two countries.

While in the region, the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley will also visit the Palestinian Territories to meet with the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas.

Their Excellencies will return to Australia ahead of Australia Day.
