On Wednesday 5 December 2018, at The National Cathedral, Washington D.C., the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), and Lady Cosgrove, attended the state funeral for former US President George H.W. Bush.

Afterwards, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove attended a lunch hosted by the Honourable Joseph Hockey, Australian Ambassador to the United States of America and Ms Melissa Babbage, with members of the Australian Embassy in attendance.

Then, as guests of Ambassador Hockey, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove met with staff working at the Australian Embassy in Washington D.C.

Earlier, at Government House, Canberra, the Administrator of the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia, His Excellency Paul de Jersey AC hosted a lunch in honour of South Asia Heads of Mission. Guests included: His Excellency Mr Babar Amin; Mrs Uzma Babar; Mr Andrew Collins; His Excellency Mr Mohammad Sufiur Rahman; Mrs Shamsia Begum; Her Excellency Ms Lucky Sherpa; Mr Ngwang Sonam Sherpa; His Excellency Mr Somasundaram Skandakumar; Mr Karthigeyan Palaniswamy Subramanyan; Mrs Vanitha Vilvaaranimurugan and His Excellency Mr Wahidullah Waissi, Ms Manizha Waissi.
