Overview

The Official Secretary to the Governor-General is a statutory office. The Official Secretary and their office support the Governor-General to carry out her constitutional, statutory, ceremonial and public duties.

Biography – Mr Gerard Martin PSM

Mr Gerard Martin is the Official Secretary to the Governor-General.

Prior to his appointment as Official Secretary, Mr Martin had more than 25 years’ experience across government. He was previously First Assistant Secretary at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C), having led the delivery of the ministerial, parliamentary, communication and international visit functions, delivering support to the Prime Minister and portfolio Ministers, as well as holding responsibility for the management of the Prime Minister's official residences. Mr Martin held other senior positions in PM&C, including with responsibility for matters relating to government administration and operations. In 2023, he was awarded the Public Service Medal for outstanding public service in delivering advice and support to the Prime Minister and his Office, and to PM&C.
