The Governor-General's Official residences

The Governor-General has two official residences – Government House in Canberra and Admiralty House in Sydney.

Both properties date to the 19th century and have a rich history. Today, the Governor-General welcomes tens of thousands of visitors each year to both Government and Admiralty House. The residences are used for events ranging from:

  • celebrations of the work of community organisations and charities
  • visits by Heads of State and royalty; and
  • investiture and swearing-in ceremonies.

Both properties are open to the public for annual Open Days. In addition over 25,000 school children visit Government House every year.

The Office of the Official Secretary to the Governor-General is responsible for maintenance and upkeep of the two historic properties.
