The Australian Honours and Awards Secretariat:

  • provides support for the Governor-General in the administration of over 40 awards that comprise the Australian honours system;
  • maintains the high standards of the honours system by ensuring that thorough and comprehensive information is available for the Council for the Order of Australia, the Australian Bravery Decorations Council and the National Emergency Medal Committee which consider nominations and make recommendations to the Governor-General;
  • undertakes day to day administration,  including: processing recommendations for approval for defence, meritorious and long service awards, ensuring the timely manufacture and availability of insignia for award ceremonies and, preparing warrants for presentation to recipients; and
  • maintains a register of all honours since commencement in 1975.
