Mrs Hurley, as Patron, launches the virtual Canberra Relay for Life
Good morning, everyone — and welcome to the ‘virtual’ launch of the Canberra Relay for Life.
It’s a pleasure for David and me to be with you.
As Patron of the Cancer Council ACT, I want to congratulate Sandra and the Council for coming up with the innovative idea of a virtual launch for this year’s relay.
And thanks to all of you for supporting the council’s biggest event of the year, and for participating and sharing your own virtual reality online.
Governor-General:
The Canberra Relay for Life is such a worthy cause. It is more important now than ever to support the Cancer Council ACT.
Funds raised between now and the end of April will help fund research and prevention programs, as well as support people affected by cancer.
Mrs Hurley:
Walking is one of the best things you can do. I do it every day. It is good for your health and wellbeing.
David and I love walking, and plan to do some laps around the lake.
We wish you all the best as you put your own walking shoes on and walk to support this worthy cause.
Governor-General:
And, above all … stay safe, stay kind and stay well.
Mrs Hurley:
Without further ado, it’s time to read the Oath and get the relay underway.
“In the name of all Relay for Life participants, I confirm that we are here to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, to support those fighting cancer, and to honour those we have lost.
Our commitment will be symbolised in every step we take — each and every one moving us nearer to our goal: the goal of a cancer-free world for future generations.”
It is now my pleasure to declare the 21st Canberra Relay for Life open.
