National Police Service Medal Determination - 2016
I, SIR PETER COSGROVE, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, having the approval of Her Majesty The Queen to the design of the National Police Service Medal, and acting in pursuance of regulations 8 and 9 of the Regulations Governing the Award of the National Police Service Medal hereby determine as follows:
1. Design
The National Police Service Medal is a cupro-nickel medal 38 millimetres in diameter, ensigned with the Crown of Saint Edward. The medal is surmounted by a fixed cupro-nickel suspender bar. The obverse bears the seven pointed Federation Star, located inside a circular chequered band. The reverse of the medal features the words ‘FOR SERVICE AS AN AUSTRALIAN POLICE OFFICER’ around the raised edges of the medal and bears a centrally located horizontal raised plinth 25 millimetres across and 8 millimetres high which has two sprigs of golden wattle set under it.
2. Miniature
The miniature of the National Police Service Medal is a half-size replica of the medal suspended from a miniature ribbon 16 millimetres wide.
3. Ribbon
The ribbon for the National Police Service Medal is 32 millimetres wide. It has a central panel 18 millimetres wide consisting of three stripes of equal width of dark blue, then gold, then dark blue. The central panel is flanked on either side by white panels 7mm wide, each bisected by a 1mm stripe of red.
4. Ribbon Bar
The ribbon bar of the National Police Service Medal consists of a strip of full-size ribbon, 32 millimetres wide and 10 millimetres deep, with no emblem.
5. Wearing
The National Police Service Medal shall be worn on the left breast on all occasions when full-size orders, decorations and medals are worn. The miniature medal is worn on all occasions when miniatures of orders, decorations and medals are worn. The ribbon bar may be worn with all forms of dress at the discretion of the holder. However, it should not be worn at the same time as full-size or miniature medals.
6. Order of Wear
The National Police Service Medal is worn in accordance with The Order of Wearing Australian Honours and Awards and is placed immediately after the Civilian Service Medal 1939-1945 as approved by The Sovereign.
