Australian Sports Medal - Frequently Asked Questions

The following events have been declared as eligible events:

a.            the Invictus Games from 2018

b.            the International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability (INAS) Global Games from 2019

c.             the Special Olympics World Summer Games from 2019

d.            the Special Olympics World Winter Games from 2021

e.            the Olympic Games (Summer) from 2020

f.             the Olympic Games (Winter) from 2022

g.            the Paralympic Games (Summer) from 2020

h.            the Paralympic Games (Winter) from 2022

i.              the Commonwealth Games from 2022.

Official team members are eligible for the Australian Sports Medal.

This includes:

• an official team support person (coach, physiotherapist, etc.) who attended and participated in their role at the declared event; and
• a competitor who attended and participated in their race, match, game or sports contest at a declared event.

Note prospective team members, those on a reserve list or those who have only participated in event training camps are not eligible.

The Australian Sports Medal may only be awarded once. Recipients of the Australian Sports Medal in 2000 are not eligible for a second medal.

Applications may take over 6 months to process. The Honours Secretariat will work closely with organisations to administer the medals.

Each organising body is encouraged to arrange ceremonies to present the medal to its recipients.

Yes. You are eligible, however approval must be sought from the government of your country of citizenship to accept and wear the award.
